Goal
The main goal of this international EFeCT-symposium 2009 (European Federation of Conflict Management and Treatment in Education and Care) is to gather, exchange and discuss critically the experience and scientific studies about methods in conflict and aggression management. Special attention will be given to Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI). The population we wish to delineate consists of children and youngsters who display disruptive behaviour in child- and youthcare, education and family.
Participants
Social workers, teachers, (group)educators, psychologists, orthopedagogues, managers, policy makers, researchers and students.
Theme
Professionals in child- and youthcare, education and the care sector are being confronted with aggression. Aggression is a daily reality. We all want to prevent it, but sometimes it suddenly appears and you have to deal with it directly.
For this purpose, an integral approach is needed. The professional must know how to deal adequately, safely and therapeutically with problem behaviour, and must be directly and effectively supported in his/her approach by the management. The challenge is to deal with these aggressive incidents in a way that encourages positive child development.
Morning programme: lectures
Focusing on real-life experiences of aggressive situations shows that professionals who are under pressure from incidents that occur within their group resort to old habits, despite new pedagogical developments.
The Life Space Crisis Intervention method will be discussed, which is a therapeutic approach that focuses on dialogue with children in crisis. LSCI was specially developed in America for teaching staff and social workers.
Discussion of the broader context of implementing a methodology for dealing with aggression on many levels within the organisation will also be on the agenda.
A vision will be presented for integrating the many theoretical trends regarding aggression that are followed in the care sector.
Afternoon programme: workshops
The afternoon programme consists of interactive workshops in which we will split into smaller groups in order to study the ideas presented in greater depth. A variety of workshops (presented by, amongst others, the Dutch youth care providers Cardea and Spirit) will address the issue of how counter-aggression methods such as LSCI can be implemented into different settings, such as education, family life and youth care.
The NJI (Netherlands Youth Institute) will present a comparison of evidence-based interventions that utilise aggression regulation and anger management.
Representatives from many European countries will present the state of affairs in their homeland regarding how aggression is dealt with, as well as results of scientific research conducted in this field.
Work media
During the symposium, the main topic will be illustrated in various ways. Video recordings of live presentations will be used, as well as practical examples and theory sessions with a variety of experts. There will also be plenty of opportunity for participants to share their own personal experiences on the subject.
Languages
Official languages of the Conference are English and Dutch. Plenary lectures in Dutch will be translated in English simultaneously. There will be a Dutch and an English track of parallel workshops.
Special program for participants from abroad
